LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE
Theatre Education Student Association
A typical day in the beginning English class started with 30 minutes of book work. This entailed each student working through their work book at their own pace. This allowed time for me to go around to different students and help with sentence structure, spelling, explanation and reading. For the duration of the time, we did different activities under the supervision and instruction of our teacher, Hannah. My favorite activity that we've done thus far has been learning about fast food and then pretending to take each other's orders. This was extremely fun for me and the students because we really got in to it. I ordered 7 different items at one time and my "waiter" told me "20 minutes" and then I pretended that that was an outrageous wait time. Another "waitress" told me they were all out of food. It was really enjoyable and I think the students were able to learn more because it was fun and "real life".
One thing that I've learned, however cliche it might sound, is that there really are so so many types of learners out there. One type of instruction may make complete sense to one, but be utterly confusing to another. In this regard, I was able to grow by starting to sense how I needed to change my instruction based upon whom I was teaching/helping.
As a teacher, I will need to be able to tweak and modify my instruction to fit the needs of my students. There isn't one set way to learn, so therefore, there isn't one set way to teach. I need to be flexible in helping my students. I'm grateful for this experience because it has helped me to see that in future planning, it's vital that I be able to not only instruct the students to their specific strengths and needs, but need to provide different examples of learning.
Below you will find my initial assignment and finished time log.

A Nursing Home Project
|
Gente Memoria" was the name of our project and translates roughly to the "memories of people." The original creator of the idea, Andrea Brandley, wanted to create a program that could go from nursing home to nursing home and perform folk songs and tell background stories on the songs. Once I found out about this project, I was quick to jump on board and ask Andrea if I could assist in anyway. She made me her co-creator and my first job was to write the first drafts of the scripts. Andrea and I collaborated really well together, she listened intently to what I had to say and ideas I had to offer, and I likewise, did the same for her. Within a month or so, we had created a script ( it is included below the pictures ) and took our performing troupe to different nursing homes. During these performances, I was able to sing and accompany (both on the piano and ukulele). The best part of this project was being able to interview the residents afterwards about their initial thoughts on the program and what we might do to improve it. I've included a few of those reviews below along with my self and peer evaluations.

Volunteer Singer |
I've been blessed with the talent of singing and often times, I'm asked to sing at various functions. One such function was in the Summer of 2014 when I sang the National Anthem at the Box Elder County Golden Spike Rodeo in front of thousands of people. I was nervous, to say the least! But thankfully, I get many opportunities to share my love of singing with others, so my "pre-show" jitters get easier to manage!
